The Down Rail Egg is a versatile singlefin mid-length designed for drawing long open carves or weaving through tight pocket sections. A culmination of Matt’s experience riding and designing mid-lengths over the past two decades, it blends classic design with modern performance features and is one of our most popular boards due to its versatility.
Affectionately abbreviated to DR-E no relation to the rapper, just a nod to the design influences that emerged from his home state of California between 1969 and 1971. Equally inspired by Australia's transitional surfboard movement, particularly the innovative shapes coming out of Brookvale during the same era, the Down Rail Egg combines the best of both worlds. Refined through years of surfing everything from everyday beach breaks to the long-period reefs and points of Indonesia and Hawaii, it has become one of Orchard's most versatile models and a favourite among customers and team riders.
The name itself comes from its defining design feature: a pronounced down rail that runs through the back half of the board. A smooth hull entry flows into a neutral bottom and subtle spiral vee through the tail delivering reliable hold, projection and control when the waves become more powerful. Like every Orchard model, its generous sweet spot allows the entire board to be surfed confidently, with no dead spots from nose to tail.
