The Step Glide is a traditional longboard that embodies the reason Matt loves longboarding, trim, flow, speed and elegant style. Inspired by the Californian longboards of the early 1960s, it rewards purposeful surfing with effortless glide, stable cross-stepping and powerful drop-knee turns. Think soul arches, six steps to the nose, pivot turns and long, flowing lines inspired by surfers like Mike Hynson, Barry Kanaiaupuni and Midget Farrelly.
Built with a central wide point, parallel outline and flatter rocker, the Step Glide is fast no matter where you stand on the board. As a result, it paddles effortlessly and generates exceptional speed through trim. A light nose concave blends into subtle roll through the tail, while refined rails and a modern blank with considered flex create a board that glides with the feel of a traditional log while retaining the responsiveness to lay into committed turns. To unlock the full character of the design, Matt recommends ordering the Step Glide 2 inches longer and ½ inch narrower than your standard longboard, glassed with a medium-weight performance lay-up over a heavier blank for maximum glide, momentum and control.
The name Step Glide originates from the first prototypes Matt shaped with a step deck. During the research and development phase, feedback from local surfers and test riders was overwhelmingly positive, and what began as a personal experiment quickly earned its place as a permanent model in the Orchard range. While the step deck has since evolved into a more refined design, the philosophy remains the same, reducing swing weight through the nose to create a board that turns more freely without sacrificing its effortless glide.
This is Matt's board of choice for larger right-hand point breaks and smaller trimming waves, and the model behind some of his best competition results in recent years.
